Life Summary
Kim Ji-yong is the inaugural chief of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency (SCIA).
He was born in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province, on May 23, 1968.
He graduated from Kongju National University High School and Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in law.
He passed the 38th national bar examination and completed the 28th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute before beginning his career as a prosecutor at the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office.
As a prosecutor in the financial investigation division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, he handled an insider trading case involving major shareholders of LG Card. At the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, he investigated corruption cases involving the special military service program for employees of designated companies.
He served as head of the special investigation division at the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office, head of the second trial division at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and head of the first inspection division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. He also served as chief of the Western Branch of the Busan District Prosecutors' Office and first deputy chief prosecutor at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office.
After being promoted to chief prosecutor, he served as deputy chief prosecutor at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, chief of the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office, head of the criminal affairs department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and deputy chief prosecutor at the Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office.
After retiring from the prosecution service, he worked as a lawyer at Apex Law. He was appointed the inaugural chief of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency in October 2026.
