He began his career as a prosecutor at the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office in 1994. He became known as a public security prosecutor while serving in positions including director of the Public Security Divisions 1 and 2 at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, chief prosecutor of the Public Security Division 1 at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, and head of the Public Security Department at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office.
He led the working-level proceedings for the dissolution trial of the Unified Progressive Party as head of the Ministry of Justice task force on unconstitutional political parties and organizations.
He left the prosecution in 2017 and worked as managing partner at Ain Law Firm.
He entered the National Assembly after winning the 2019 by-election for the Tongyeong-Goseong constituency in South Gyeongsang Province.
He was reelected in the same constituency in 2020 and 2024, becoming a three-term lawmaker.
He served as chair of the People Power Party’s Legal Advisory Committee, an emergency committee member, chair of the Policy Committee, and secretary-general.
He was elected floor leader of the People Power Party in June 2026.
