Life Summary

Kim Seung-yeon is chairman of Hanwha Group.

He is focusing on handing over management control to his three sons, led by his eldest son Kim Dong-kwan, vice chairman of Hanwha Group.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1952, in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, as the eldest son among the two sons and one daughter of Kim Jong-hee, the founder of Hanwha Group.

He graduated from Kyunggi High School, then from Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in the United States and the business administration department of Menlo College. He received a master’s degree in international politics from the graduate school of DePaul University.

In 1981, after his father died, he became chairman at the age of 29.

After being found guilty of breach of trust in 2014, he stepped down from all CEO positions at group affiliates while keeping only his title as group chairman. Later, in 2021, he returned to management after seven years by taking non-registered executive posts at Hanwha, Hanwha Solutions and Hanwha Engineering & Construction.

He also served as vice chairman of the Korean Olympic Committee, chairman of the Korea Amateur Boxing Federation, chairman of Kyunghyang Shinmun, chairman of the board of Sungkonghoe University and chairman of the board of Bugil High School.

He has put trust at the core of his management philosophy and created a distinctive organizational culture that values loyalty.
