Life Summary
Lee Jae-yong is the chairman of Samsung Electronics.
He was born in Seoul on June 23, 1968, as the eldest son among the one son and three daughters of Lee Kun-hee, the former chairman of Samsung Group.
After graduating from Kyungbock High School in Seoul and the Department of Asian History at Seoul National University, he earned a master's degree in business administration from the Graduate School of Business Administration at Keio University in Japan and completed a doctoral program in business administration at Harvard Business School in the United States.
He joined Samsung Electronics as a manager in the General Affairs Group and received management training while working as executive vice president in charge of management strategy at the Management Planning Team, chief operating officer (COO) and vice president, and then president.
After former Chairman Lee Kun-hee collapsed from an acute myocardial infarction in 2014, he effectively oversaw the management of Samsung Group. After Chairman Lee Kun-hee died in 2020, he succeeded to the group’s management control.
He was implicated in the Park Geun-hye and Choi Soon-sil influence-peddling scandal, was sentenced to prison, served time, and was released on parole.
He became chairman of Samsung Electronics after receiving a special Liberation Day pardon and reinstatement in 2022.
In the case involving allegations over accounting practices at Samsung Biologics related to the merger process between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries, he received a final not-guilty ruling from the Supreme Court.
