Cho Won-tae is the Chairman of Hanjin Group and also serves as the CEO of Korean Air.
He is completing the integration of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, which will officially launch in 2027, and is focusing on strengthening Korean Air’s competitiveness in the global aviation market.
He is also preparing for a potential future management dispute with Hoban Group, which has been increasing its stake in the holding company, Hanjin KAL.
He was born on January 25, 1976, in Seoul, the eldest son among one son and two daughters of the late Cho Yang-ho, former Chairman of Hanjin Group.
He graduated from Marian High School in the United States, transferred from Hilbert College to the Department of Business Administration at Inha University, and later completed an MBA program at the University of Southern California.
After joining Hanjin Information Systems & Telecommunications, he moved to Korean Air.
In 2007, he was appointed CEO of Uniconverse, Hanjin Group’s IT subsidiary.
In 2016, he became CEO of Korean Air and in 2019, he was inaugurated as Chairman of Hanjin Group.
Although he was at a disadvantage in the group’s management control battle due to a lower equity stake, he reversed the situation through the acquisition and merger of Asiana Airlines.
By successfully acquiring Asiana Airlines, he ushered in the era of a “mega carrier,” or super-scale airline.
As a third-generation owner-manager, he has been transforming Korean Air’s traditionally conservative corporate culture into one that is younger and more innovative.
