Chung Mong-hyuck is the chairman of Hyundai Corporation Group. He also serves as CEO of both Hyundai Corporation Holdings, the group's holding company, and Hyundai Corporation, its core affiliate.
He transformed Hyundai Corporation, which once served as the import-export window for the extended Hyundai family, into a global conglomerate that integrates manufacturing and distribution.
He was born on July 29, 1961, in Seoul.
He graduated from Kyungbock High School in Seoul and earned a degree in Mathematical Economics from California State University in the United States.
He began his professional career in 1989 as Vice President of Kukdong Oil. In 1996, at the age of 32, he was appointed CEO of Hyundai Oil Refinery (now Hyundai Oilbank) and Hyundai Petrochemical. He stepped down from these positions after taking responsibility for deteriorating business conditions during the Asian financial crisis.
Afterward, he served as chairman of H Avenue & Company, a lighting equipment manufacturer, and later became CEO of Metia (formerly Aju Metal), an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group.
Cousins within the extended Hyundai family supported his return, and Hyundai Heavy Industries, having completed its workout program, acquired the struggling Hyundai Corporation and entrusted its management to Chung.
In December 2009, he was appointed chairman of Hyundai Corporation.
Though he initially maintained a conservative management style, he has since shown flexibility by promoting new business ventures across various sectors through investments and mergers and acquisitions.
