He was born on October 17, 1959, in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea.

Kim graduated from Seongnam High School in Seoul and earned a degree in economics from Sungkyunkwan University. He also obtained a master's degree in business administration from McGill University in Canada.

In 1984, he joined LG Group and worked there for 38 years until retiring as an advisor to LG Energy Solution at the end of 2021.

During his time at LG, he held various roles, including positions at LG Household & Health Care and LG Group’s Chairman’s Office. At LG Chem, he served as Managing Director of Management Innovation, Head of the Rubber/Specialty Resin Division, Head of the Small Battery Division, Head of the Automotive Battery Division, and Head of the Battery Business Division.

He was appointed the first CEO of LG Energy Solution when it was spun off as a separate entity from LG Chem's battery business division.

Kim is credited as the key driver behind LG Chem’s rise to the top of the global electric vehicle battery market, leading the battery business into a period of significant growth.

In 2021, he stepped down from his role at LG after taking responsibility for the GM recall incident involving battery fires. Following this, he served as an advisor before joining DL Chemical, the chemical arm of DL Group, as its CEO.

Kim emphasizes the "three virtues" of courage, wisdom, and perseverance to his employees.
